Are you having ceramic tile flooring installed at your home? It might seem difficult but it is actually a good DIY project for people who can handle it. All you will need is a lot of time and patience.
The materials necessary are:
- Tile sheets
- Cement board
- Adhesive for tile
- The tools you will need before getting started are:
- A square notched trowel,
- A knife,
- Measuring tape,
- Wet saw
- Tile nippers
Given below is a step by step procedure as to how to install tiles flooring:
Firstly begin by taking proper measurements of the room where the tiles have to be installed.
Once the proper measurements are taken, cut the cement board according to the required size. The cement board might be hard, but not very difficult to cut. You can cut using a utility knife. Once the board is cut in to the required pieces lay them on the floor and make sure it fits well.
Once the cement board is tentatively fixed, use a screw gun to secure the cement. For every 6-8 inches, place the cement board screws and fix them.
Once the board is placed, take a chalk and mark the centre of the room. Draw two lines where the intersection marks the centre of the room.
Now lay the tile sheets starting from the centre. The tiles come in sheets where each square is about 1 foot. Under the tiles you can notice rubber dots which are easy to cut and they help to hold the tiles together and also help when you have to prepare the grout lines.
Now start working in small sections of the room, pick up a section of the ceramic tiles and spread the adhesive using a square notched trowel. It is best if you start from the centre of the room and leave the edges and the corners for a later time. Make sure to spread the adhesive evenly and in a smooth way.
Once the adhesive is applied, set the tile sheet and press it firmly. Before you start with the second set, make sure to check the spacing and the pattern and then fix it in to the adhesive. Finish up with the centre of the room.
For the edges, you will have to trim the sheets to make them fit accordingly.
Some tips to follow during ceramic tile installation:
- To cut the tiles, it is best to use a waster saw as the water in the blade keeps the blade from getting too hot.
- Use tile nippers to make small cuts on a tile. You can make small cuts.
- Make sure to mix the grout in a way that it is easy to spread. Put the grout on the tiles and spread it using a rubber grout float. Leave it on for 15-20 minutes and then wipe it using a damp sponge.
- Grout can get dirty, therefore seal the grout and keep your floor looking clean.
Installing ceramic tile may be time taking but the result is something you and your family will be pleased with.
