The term “hardwood flooring” can be used to describe both solid hardwoods as well as engineered hardwood flooring. If you’re wondering what the difference is between the two, you’re not alone.

We’ll explain a bit more about how these materials work and how they can specifically work for you. And with so many uses and such an amazing lifespan, you’ll love the results.

Solid vs. engineered hardwood flooring

Solid hardwood is, as you might expect, a solid piece of wood, through and through. It’s exceptionally stable, durable, and offers one of the greatest lifespans in flooring.

Engineered flooring is still real hardwood, with a veneer of your species choice, but the veneer is attached to plied layers and topped with a heavily resistant wear layer on top.

The most significant difference between the two is the installation location option. While solid wood is an excellent choice for many spaces, it cannot be installed in below-grade rooms. In those areas, engineered flooring is an excellent alternative.

You can choose your favorite species, such as a mahogany wood; stain colors, and finishes for both floors. And both can be refinished to remove years of wear and bring them back to a like-new finish, which will last for another few decades before refinishing again.

Both solid and engineered materials are a great choice and are often installed together in the same home. When the solid variety isn't a good fit for a specific space, just move over to an engineered for the continuity that will make your home look magnificent.
