It’s important to know that updating the look of your home doesn’t have to cost you a fortune. It’s possible to give your home a completely new look by simply investing in some hardwood laminate flooring. The guide below walks you through three affordable ways to use flooring to add more character to your home.
Update Your Kitchen Cabinet Doors
Wooden cabinet doors can add a rustic feel to a kitchen. In order to use wood flooring on your cabinets, you need to determine how you want to lay the wood out first. You could create a large X with a border around it, simply place a border around the edges of the front of the door or cover the entire door to create a planked look. Measure all of the boards and cut them to the appropriate size and then use construction adhesive to attach them to the cabinet doors. It’s best to remove the doors from the cabinets before you attempt to attach the wood.
Create a Decorative Ceiling
Another great way to use laminate flooring is to create a decorative element on the ceiling in a room. Tongue and groove laminate flooring is great for use on the ceiling. Use 1 1/2″ brad nails and a nail gun to attach the first piece of flooring. Press the tongue and groove together with the next piece and continue secure that piece into place next. You want to be sure that you are putting the nails in at an angle so that they stay in place properly after everything is secured. You may have to cut and piece the wood together to cover the whole ceiling.
Create a Rustic Wall
You can also use laminate wood flooring to create a rustic wall. Simply place a piece of flooring against the wall, use the nail gun to secure it to the wall and then place the pieces next to it one by one and secure it. If you want to make the wall really unique, consider attaching the wood on the diagonal.
All of these decorative elements can be created with scrap pieces of wood or inexpensive elements. Most people will not be able to tell that they are laminate, and the end result will add a lot of visual interest to the room.
Make Your Outdated Wood Flooring More Unique by Painting a Faded Rug on It
Over time, a wooden floor can start to become a bit boring to look at it. Many people want to update the look of their home without having to put carpeting or rugs throughout it. A great way to add character to the floors in your home is to paint faded rugs on them. The guide that follows walks you through the process to use when creating the one-of-a-kind rug.
Prep the Floor
Before you can start painting, you need to determine where you want the rug to be situated in the room. Use 180-grit sandpaper to lightly sand the area where you plan to paint the rug. This will make the paint stick better and ensure that the surface is as smooth as it can be. Use a wet rag to wipe the area after sanding and allow the wood to dry before continuing.
Create a Design
Use wood paint to create an outline for the rug. The edges of the rug don’t have to be sharp and exact because most rugs become tattered over time and lose their sharp edges. You can use a stencil to create a design on the interior portion of the rug or freehand different designs to make it as unique as you want it to be. Don’t be afraid to use bold colored paint for the rug because once they are distressed, they won’t appear to be as bold.
Distress the Paint
After the paint has dried overnight, you want to distress it to give it a more worn look. Use a 150-grit sanding sponge to lightly go over the entire rug. Make sure that you rub on some areas more than others so that it can look as though the rug has become worn the same way real rugs do.
After the rug has been distressed, use a wet rag to wipe away all of the dust and allow the area to dry. If the rug is located in an area that gets a lot of traffic or in an area that is prone to a lot of direct sunlight, use a paintbrush to paint a coat of water-based polyurethane over the rug so that it doesn’t actually wear away quickly.
