Make A Difference With Eco-Friendly Flooring

Today, it is very important to many of our customers to look for flooring solutions that support efforts toward “going green” and being otherwise environmentally conscious. In the past, eco-friendly flooring options may have been seen as boring, sterile floors made out of bland materials. As this movement has grown in popularity, manufacturers have listened, and they now provide numerous flooring options in the latest styles, colors, and materials to help support this initiative. At Express Flooring, we offer many different types of high-quality, environmentally sustainable flooring options at great prices. We have a unique collection of non-toxic and recycled flooring options that will look great anywhere in your home.

Eco-Friendly Certifications

Our eco-friendly flooring options undergo stringent testing and certification to ensure that they are a smart, sustainable choice for not only your home, but the environment as well.

GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality

The GREENGUARD certification is overseen by the Greenguard Environmental Institute and tests the emissions levels of 364 Volatile Organic Compounds in flooring. Because there are always new chemical compounds being used and introduced during manufacturing, GREENGUARD takes an overall measure of the sum of all gasses emitted by a certain product. Each piece of flooring must not exceed the healthy level of VOC emissions to get Greenguard certification.

FloorScore Indoor Air Quality Certification

The FloorScore certification was developed by The Resilient Floor Covering Institute that uses a third-party certifier to test and certify flooring options. The certification tests chemical emissions from hard-surface flooring and laminate, and is based on California Specification 01350. This specification sets limits for 38 Volatile Organic Compounds.

LEED Certification

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Certification is an internationally recognized certification that is used to measure various environmental metrics including energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions, and indoor air quality. The LEED certification is one of the most well recognized and universally accepted certifications on the market.

Types Of Eco-Friendly Flooring

Ceramic, Glass and Porcelain Tile

Tile is generally created with natural ingredients, so it is completely free of VOCs. Some options are even created from recycled materials, which makes this a sustainable flooring choice. Learn more about our eco-friendly tile options>

Reclaimed Hardwood

While regular hardwood isn’t considered an eco-friendly option, reclaimed hardwood is made entirely of recycled wood. The wood used to create this flooring is repurposed from sources including old military structures, box cars, abandoned warehouses, and more. Fans of reclaimed wood give many reasons why they prefer it over newly manufactured wood. Here are some reasons why reclaimed wood is becoming more sought after:

  • A sustainable choice. By its nature, reusing wood that normally would have been thrown out, burned or otherwise destroyed reduces waste and landfill space.
  • Wood with a story. The source of reclaimed wood can have a long story attached to it. Wood coming from old barns, schools, shipyards, or other buildings brings out even more richness to the look and feel of reclaimed wood.
  • Hard and durable. Since most reclaimed wood has been around for decades or longer, it’s had the time to go through its growing pains. Because of this, reclaimed wood is stronger and more climate resistant than new wood.
  • Unique species choices. As conservation for trees and forests has grown and changed over the years, some species of wood are only available as reclaimed wood.
