Regular vinyl usually comes in sheet form or square tiles, with a thin backing layer of fiberglass or felt. The vinyl itself is printed with the design that gives the flooring its "look," and a transparent wear layer is added, usually measuring between 10 to 15 mils, which equates to roughly 10/1000 to 15/1000 of an inch.

Luxury vinyl features an entirely different construction, where multiple layers are bonded together. Each layer is relatively thick in its own right, so the overall vinyl plank is quite a bit thicker than regular sheet flooring, especially if you choose rigid core vinyl.

Regular vinyl is more affordable, thinner, and features full glue-down installation options, offering about 10 to 15 years of lifespan. Luxury vinyl provides floating installation, can last more than 25 years, and is considered reasonable even for high-end settings.
